Atlas Demolition & Site Work is a locally owned demolition contractor based in Columbia, Missouri. Chris Kurtz owns the company and sells, bids and runs the demolition work himself. When you call, you talk to the person who will walk your site, write your proposal and be in the excavator when the roof comes down. Old-school work ethic. Modern-day results.
Demolition first. We tear down houses, garages, barns, mobile homes and light commercial buildings, and we strip interiors back to the studs for remodels. Concrete second. We break out and haul off slabs, driveways, parking lots and foundations, and our concrete crew pours the replacement when you want one. Site work is the finish: the basement backfilled and compacted, the lot graded to drain, seed and straw or gravel down. Tear it out, haul it off, put it back.
We stay inside that lane on purpose. A company that does everything does most of it badly. We would rather be the crew you call for a teardown and a new driveway and know exactly what you are getting.
One contract and one point of contact. Chris writes the proposal, schedules the job and is on site while it runs. If a job needs a trade we do not carry in-house, such as asbestos abatement, concrete finishing or extra hauling, the sub works under our contract and our warranty. We collect a certificate of insurance from every sub before they set foot on the property. You never get handed off to someone whose name you did not know.
Pricing is the same on every job. A fixed price covers mobilization, equipment and crew. Disposal is billed as a pass-through at actual loads and tonnage, $40 to $90 per ton in Mid-Missouri, and you see the tickets. Permits, utility disconnects and the asbestos inspection Missouri DNR requires before most teardowns are coordinated before the first wall comes down.
The primary machine is a 2019 Cat 308 excavator with a hydraulic breaker, grapple and thumb. It is the right size for a residential teardown in a tight Columbia lot: enough reach to pull a two-story house down onto its own footprint, small enough to get down a driveway without tearing up the neighbor's yard. Skid steers handle loading, grading and cleanup. When the job is a commercial building, a thick parking lot or a heavy foundation, we rent a 13 to 15 ton excavator for the week rather than fight it with a machine that is too small.
We carry general liability, an umbrella policy and workers' compensation. Ask for the certificate of insurance before we start and you will have it the same day. Every sub who works under our contract carries their own coverage and provides a certificate before they are on site.
We work in Columbia, Jefferson City, Fulton, Moberly, Fayette, Boonville, Ashland and the rest of Mid-Missouri within about 45 minutes of Columbia. Most of our work is for property owners directly: a homeowner replacing a house that is past saving, a farm family clearing an old barn or mobile home, a landlord taking out a cracked driveway, a small business owner who needs a building down before the new one goes up. We also work for general contractors and on public projects when the scope fits what we do well. Public and GC work comes with its own paperwork, such as lien waivers and certified payroll, and we handle it, but we bid it only when the scope is demolition, concrete or site work and not a catch-all excavation package. Either way the process is the same: a site visit, a written fixed-price proposal, and a crew that shows up when it said it would.
